Keep it Interesting with Alternative Beta

I think there’s value in setting a route or problem with options for alternative beta. If there’s only one way to do the route, it seems like a waste. Climbers should be able to find their own variations to moves. The best way I find to do this is to add some alternate feet or a handhold that can be held in different ways, depending on how your body is set up. Ideally, climbers should be on the ground pointing at the route and trying to think their way up it. Physical strength is good- what’s better is making your climbers think. They’ll feel encouraged by coming up with their own way to do it, and you may even get a few new ideas for moves to put in future routes. Tip submitted by Kyle Ritland
